Disney has officially announced that a sequel to its Marvel Comics film Thor will be hammering its way into theaters July 26, 2013. Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his role as the mighty god of thunder, this time with the experience of the 2012 team-up The Avengers under his belt.
Kenneth Branagh will not be returning to direct the film, although sources are reporting that he may step into the role of producer for the sequel.
Details of the film’s plot are as yet unknown, although some announcements may be made at ComicCon at the end of July 2011. Since Disney/Marvel is choosing to create a “Marvel Universe” synergy with Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, linking the characters in the Avengers, it will be interesting to see how the individual hero films relate to or separate themselves from the team up film.
The July 2013 release date emphasizes the strong positioning that the acquisition of Marvel provides for Disney. Thor will follow the May 3, 2013 release of Iron Man 3 and the June 21, 2013 release of Monsters University. The three films give Disney the opportunity to dominate several markets over the summer movie season.
Will you be awaiting news on the new Thor film? Is Disney’s investment in Marvel being well handled?
