Thor is the Norse God of Thunder. He lives in Asgard, one of the nine realms which include Earth, where it’s normal to have superhuman strength and abilities. Thor is almost never without his Mjolnir. It’s a hammer that creates weather and allows Thor to fly. For a brief time, Thor’s father, Odin, took his hammer away and banished him to Earth to teach his son humility. Thor developed humility, patience and manners. He also was discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. which led to becoming an Avenger.
As the oldest son of Odin, Thor is the crown prince of Asgard which has made him spoiled at times. His feelings are just as strong as his physical prowess whether that’s anger or love. He carries immense love for his brother, Loki, despite Loki’s sometimes villainous actions. Thor is often torn between love for the brother he’s always known and having to stop him from causing widespread destruction.
Chris Hemsworth was born August 11, 1983 in Melbourne, Australia and spent part of his upbringing in the outback. After finishing school, his older brother, Luke, went into acting. Chris and his younger brother, Liam, both followed in his footsteps. However, Luke stayed in Australia while Chris and Liam moved to the United States. Hemsworth seemed to have immediate success by playing James T. Kirk’s father in the 2009 reboot/alternate universe of Star Trek. However, he ran into a string of projects that either stalled or fell through. One such project was The Cabin in the Woods whose release was delayed for two years. The co-writer and producer of that film is Joss Whedon who became very impressed by Hemsworth.
“Drew (Goddard, Cabin’s director) and Joss said to me, ‘Why the hell aren’t you playing Thor?’” Hemsworth recalls. “I said, ‘I don’t know. I had an audition and it went nowhere.’ Joss [spoke to] Kenneth Branagh and said some great things, and that got me back in the game.”
