Part of Pixar’s ongoing success is their refusal to do things the way that Hollywood expects them to. From the moment the short film Luxo, Jr premiered in 1986, Pixar had something special – they always looked for the heart of a story, and they were not afraid to take risks. From a kid who blows up toys with firecrackers to a film featuring a sidekick cockroach to a scene dealing with the loss of a child, Pixar has never shied away from quirky ore even dark content as long as it leads audiences to the heart of a story. And, as 2012 draws closer, it is the knowledge of that refusal to be conventional that has been fuelling excitement for the studio’s upcoming feature Brave, where it seems that Pixar will take on “Fairy Tales” through a far more traditional lens than that of their Disney counterparts.
The news that Pixar would be producing their first fairy tale film, and that it would feature the studio’s first female protagonist sent a ripple of excitement through the fan community. Initial images from the film, and a brief teaser trailer only fuelled that excitement, offering a glimpse of breathtaking landscapes and new animation of hair…lots of curly hair…on the round faced heroine.
But not much has been released beyond those initial images.
Several weeks ago, at Disney’s premiere D23 Expo, those attending the Animation panel were treated to a few additional glimpses of the upcoming film, and shortly thereafter, Pixar released a new, more in-depth synopsis:
